NHM Interview: Gino D’Acampo

I’m very excited to feature our first interview on NorthHantsMum. I was invited to meet with Gina D’Acampo but unfortunately couldn’t make it due to work commitments (boo hiss!) so I asked my NHM Writers if any of them would like to meet Gino and ask him some questions.

Thank you very much to Karen for her lovely review below (can’t BELIEVE she also got a snog from Gino! lol) and also to everyone who put forward questions for Gino via “Louise nhm Smith“.

NHM Interview: Gino D’Acampo

Gino

Small J and I were very excited when NorthHantsMum asked us to visit Waterstones and interview chef Gino D’Acampo (although I expect Smalls excitement had more to do with the singing train in Festival Place!)

We arrived to find a rather large queue of very excited people all clutching a copy of Gino’s new book ‘Gino’s Islands in the Sun,’ waiting patiently to catch a glimpse of the author.  We hurried to get a copy and waited inside the store in anticipation. Soon word went round that he was here, but lost in the backstage area behind the shops.  Thankfully Gino found his way through the maze and we were lucky enough to have the first opportunity to speak to him and ask him some of your questions

We asked Gino how Italian’s foster a healthy attitude to food in their children. Gino answered that it was easy as that’s how they are born. Italian food is healthy and delicious so it is not difficult to get children to love it. In his book he mentions rules that are taught to Sardinian children including taking a walk and going out and enjoying fresh air whatever the weather which might go some way to explaining why Sardinians have such a long lifespan.

One reader wanted to know who Gino’s food inspiration was. He told us that it was his Grandfather who used to cook him anything and everything Italian. He used fresh simple ingredients to make wonderful Italian dishes. I could understand how that would cause him to fall in love with food.

It’s easy to see where Gino gets some of his rules for life, ‘Celebrate your elders’ and ‘use fresh ingredients where possible.’ I also like the one regarding drinking a glass of red wine daily and the bonus is that he suggests Cannonau, from Sardinia, which contains more antioxidants than any other wine in the world.

Gino’s suggestion for a simple fun Italian recipe to cook with your children was pizza.   In his new book there are 2 pizza ideas, one with courgette ribbons and flowers and one with anchovy, olive and capers.

Gino was kind enough to sign my copy of his new book and I am planning to try out his suggestion of courgette pizza out on Small J soon. Of course he’s going to have to help to cook it.

After being kissed on the cheek (blush) by Gino in front of the whole store he was nice enough to pose for a photo with us. We left him to continue to meet the rest of his fans (and went to visit the singing train….again).

Review 2015: Elderly Primagravida

Thank you very much to Kathryn for her Review of Elderly Primagravida in 2015!

Elderly Primagravida and 29 weeks

….a woman who becomes pregnant for the first time after the age of 34/35 (age depends on what website you look at!)

The fact that I actually became pregnant at the age of 38 and is classed as “elderly,” left me a bit miffed to say the least!

However despite this and whether this has been down to my “status”, my pre existing medical conditionals or good luck, I cannot fault the care I have received so far from both my Community Midwife, the Antenatal clinic and the Day Assessment Unit.

I guess I’ve more visits to both the Community Midwife and Antenatal clinic than I the average pregnant lady and each time, I’ve never felt that I’ve been a time waster or a neurotic pregnant lady, quite the opposite and I was reassured that it is ok to worry and best to get things seen to rather than leave them and at any time I have the need to have my worries ironed just call and I will be seen at the Day Assessment Unit at the maternity unit.

I am also under a Consultants Obstetrician, I think because of my “elderly” age and pre existing conditions and again I can’t fault the care I have been given.  The last appointment I attended my Blood Pressure was a little high to say the least, this of course was duly noted and after waiting what seems an age.

I finally saw the Consultant (not the original one as previously but still well informed and very professional), she covered all the normal stuff but was concerned about my BP which was measured a couple more times, it was still high and whilst she was writing up her notes she said she was debating with herself what she should do about this BP.  She came to the decision that I should be admitted, much to me and my partners disappointed. I didn’t have to wait long too be escorted up to the ward where a bed was waiting for me.

Feeling a little unnerved I kind of settled on the bed, while waiting for a Nurse to let me know what was happening.

My Blood pressure was taking a couple of times before I was given a little orange tablet. I was monitored for another hour or so before I was provided with food (a nice surprise seeing as I hadn’t had lunch as I was due to go back to work and it wasnt half bad)

Whilst eating my tea, the Doctor came round and prodded and poke me, asked a few questions and said that my BP had come down a significant amount and she was happy for me to go home….yay!  Feeling relieved we left the Ward….until next and last time ( when we finally get to meet our little man)

I’ve been very fortunate to have had such a good experience with all the Healthcare professionals who have dealt with me and my pregnancy, even if i haven’t/ am not enjoying the whole experience yet/so far but i am sure all the mood swings, tears and tantrums will all be worth it….

Before I sign off I leave you with this… if you are worried at all, no matter how big all small

Keep Calm

And

Call a midwife! 😀

NHM Reader Experiences: Would you like to write a post on NorthHantsMum about your experiences of parenting?

I’ve had a few people ask me recently if they could write a post just for NorthHantsMum.

I always say YES PLEASE!!!! because it takes the pressure off of me having to post every day, it helps the person who is writing the post and it gives another perspective to NHM Readers that I may have no experience of.

Amber did an awesome job on the reusable nappies post that was posted in March and I’ve been meaning to ask if there was anyone else who wanted to write a post about their experience of an element of parenting.

So, in the same vein as NHM Secret Reviews, is there a burning issue that relates to your under 6 year old that you would like to share your experience of? Something that might help other parents?

Your post can be anonymous if you would prefer or you can be credited for your work by having your first name on a post, it’s totally up to you.

If this is something you would like to do, you can email me at NorthHantsMum@gmail.com with your post and any pictures (no more than 10 maximum) in .jpeg format.

Thank you in advance!

Review 2015: Ideal Imaging, Lifestyle Bespoke Family Photography by Alistair Jones

Alistair runs Ideal Imaging and I met him a few years ago, via NorthHantsMum. I’ve been desperate to have a photography shoot with Alistair for a couple of years now but the timing has never worked.

Alistair has always been very supportive of NorthHantsMum and when I saw that he was running a special offer earlier in the year, I leapt at the chance.

I’ve been following the Ideal Imaging facebook page since I met Alistair. I’ve seen many of the pictures that Alistair has taken and thought they all look fabulous. I love that the pictures are taken at several different locations including Tylney Hall, a beautiful hotel near Basingstoke.

Pre Session briefing with Alistair

About a week before our shoot, Alistair came to our house to talk us through what to expect and to advise on how we should prepare for the shoot.

We discussed what to expect, what we should wear and the pre session also gave us a chance to introduce Miss NHM to Alistair, so that she knew who he was when we saw him a week later.

It also gave Alistair an opportunity to meet us and to understand the personalities involved and to stress that he wanted to make it into an “adventure” for Miss NHM.

We talked through what to avoid (big logos and high heels!) and what to bring with us on the day (wet wipes was a key thing to remember!) and Mr NHM and I learnt about the colour wheel and how important this can be to ensure that the colours we were wearing didn’t clash with the colours of Spring at Tylney Hall.

Mr NHM also asked questions about the weather. Alistair explained that if it’s bad then we’ll simply re-schedule but said that 95% of the time it’s fine. We learnt that you don’t really want bright sunshine on the day of your shoot as this can cause shadows, squinting and the sun can wash out colours. It’s actually much better for the photographs if the weather is overcast as the colour come out better. Not really difficult with our English weather! :-D.

At the end of our initial pre-shoot session Alistair gave us a few print out’s that reiterated what we had talked about, just to ensure that we got the best out of our experience. This was great because it meant I didn’t have to remember everything, I had a handy sheet reminding me of it all! Lol.

I really loved the Pre session briefing with Alistair. It gave Mr NHM and I a chance to ask lots of questions and helped put my mind at ease as to what to expect on the day.

Photo Shoot at Tylney Hall

On the day of our shoot the weather wasn’t great. However, we weren’t worried as Alistair had already mentioned that this wouldn’t be an issue when we saw him at our Pre-Session.

If you have ever been to the hotel before, you will know that it is a very grand location and the drive up the main road to the entrance is beautiful. We met Alistair in the car park to the side of Tylney Hall.

I took a couple of outfits with us because I’m like that (no comment!). When I asked Alistair which outfit he thought would be best, he chose the same one I wanted Miss NHM to wear so I should really have just gone with my gut instinct. So we did a quick change for Miss NHM in the car.

Alistair then pulled out his teddy bear assistant and Miss NHM chose a name for the teddy bear and we were off to start the shoot.

I’ve only ever been in the hotel for Afternoon Tea and a work do, so never spent time in the gardens at Tylney Hall. They are Stunning!! It’s the perfect backdrop for some gorgeous photos. There are lots of different areas that you can walk around so you get a lot of variety in the pictures taken.

I have to admit that Miss NHM was a bit of a rat bag during her photo shoot. She really wouldn’t do anything we wanted her to and Mr NHM and I found it very challenging. Mr NHM and I even reverted to reverse psychology which seemed to work really well. If we asked Miss to do the opposite of what we wanted her to actually do, she would then do it!

Alistair took it all in his stride. He did a great job of letting Miss NHM do her own thing whilst he captured the best of her character and natural personality. When I look at the pictures now, I’m amazed that they came out so brilliantly. It just shows how good Alistair is, at what he does.

We walked all over the grounds and the photos tell the story of our experience. The shoot lasted about an hour which was just the right amount of time for Miss NHM. We finished in the daffodil area and despite Miss NHM getting tired at this point, you can see that the pictures are still fantastic.

Reviewing the pictures

Alistair came to our house about 10 days after the shoot and we looked at all of the pictures on his laptop. It must be wonderful for Alistair to do this because literally every picture we saw we were saying things like “Wow” or “Isn’t that fab”.

I was very nervous about reviewing the pictures. I was still worried about the fact that Miss NHM had been a rat bag on the day. However, I should have trusted in Alistair’s professionalism because I’m not lying when I say that every picture was brilliant. We had over 50 pictures taken during our shoot and every single one is just perfect.

As the pictures were taken outside and not in a studio they aren’t staged, so the expressions on Miss NHM’s face are really natural. I love this! I will always be able to look at these pictures and remember her at four years old, having the time of her life running around outside! Lol.

Alistair brought a number of samples along with him, to show the pictures at their best. One thing I really like all is that all items purchased are built to stand the test of time and become family heirlooms. For example, the Wall Art is all UV protected and stain resistant.

There is no obligation to buy but when you see the pictures it’s very difficult not too want all of what’s available!

Final Thoughts

When you book a lifestyle session with Alistair you get the complete service. I really liked the idea of having the pre-session briefing and then the follow up review. I was very impressed at how Alistair goes out of his way to make you feel comfortable and relaxed. It was clearly very important to him that we got the most out of the whole experience and had some fantastic pictures to take away from the experience.

The pictures themselves are just perfect. We couldn’t have asked for any better.

You can find out more about Alistair’s Lifestyle Bespoke Family Photography at:

Website http://www.idealimaging.uk.com/

Facebook Page https://www.facebook.com/idealimagingphotography

AND Alistair has kindly agreed to give all NHM readers 20% off his Family Lifestyle sessions! Simply quote NHM when you book (expires 31st December 2015)

Thank you very much to Alistair for a fabulous experience and for the wonderful memories that we have of our shoot!

My Sky Dive is….TOMORROW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

EEEKKK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Earlier in the week I was absolutely terrified about doing my Sky Dive, but at the moment, I’m of the mindset: “Bring it ON!”.

(That might change tomorrow, when I’m up in a teeny tiny plane and there’s only air between me and the ground! lol.)

You’ve probably picked up, that I can be a “tad” dramatic at times – the above sentence being clear evidence of this!

So, I’ve left just two instructions for Mr NHM, just in case anything happens.

They consist of:

1. WWLD? (What Would Louise Do?)

and

2. Delegate!!!!

He may have raised his eyebrows when I mentioned these to him yesterday.

(Although, I don’t think I will need to worry too much, as Miss NHM is already keeping him in check! Hahaha.)

Anyyyywaaaay, thank you very much to everyone who has sponsored me so far.

You are all AWESOME!

If you would like to sponsor me, but haven’t yet, there is still time: https://www.justgiving.com/Louise-NorthHantsMum

Fingers crossed the weather is good tomorrow so I can jump, as don’t think I can cope with delaying it! 😀

Look out for the pictures tomorrow night 😉

NHM Summer Expo 2015 – Total Raised for Sebastian’s Action Trust!!

Ok, so I need to double, double check this because I have hit a bit of a wall this afternoon, but I think the final total for the money raised at the Expo was….

£793!!!?!?!??!?!

That’s after my costs of hall hire, public liability insurance, bags for the goody bags, etc.

YAAAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So, if you add in that my Just Giving Sponsorship page is now at £110 in donations, that means my current Sky Dive total for Sebastian’s Action Trust, for NorthHantsMum, is…..

£903!!!!!!!???!?!??!

WOOOOWWW!!!

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, soooo much to everyone who has helped me raise that amount.

I’ve really got to jump now! lol.

There is still time to sponsor me: https://www.justgiving.com/Louise-NorthHantsMum

Wouldn’t it be awesome if I made it to £1000 in sponsorship by my Sky Dive in 11 days.  😀 😀 😀

Homeschooling in Basingstoke and North Hampshire

(I think this post is quite apt after yesterday’s “school announcements”! ;-))

PS: I have a secret homeschooling group on Facebook which has several families who homeschool in the local area included. If you would like to be added, please email me at NorthHantsMum@gmail.com.

Homeschooling in Basingstoke and North Hampshire

Before Miss NHM was born, I only vaguely knew about home schooling. I knew some people who had been home schooled but never really thought more about it.

Once Miss NHM was born, this all changed. I read a LOT of parenting blogs when I was on maternity leave and learnt about Montesori and Waldorf Steiner Education. I also read more and more about homeschooling.

I knew before Miss NHM was born that the school system was constantly being changed, however it was only once Miss NHM was born that I realised how much this could actually affect my daughter, and thus, me.

I am very dissolusioned with the school system in this country, and that’s before Miss NHM even starts school. I have many friends whose children have been through the school system, despair at how their children were used as guinea pigs, all dependent on which political party got into power. I don’t want this for Miss NHM.

Schools also seem to be very subjective. You have no choice, as Pam recently commented on NHM, over the class or teacher that your child is put with.

I would LOVE to home school my daughter but I have absolutely no idea where to start. But, since starting NHM I have learnt that there are more and more people doing this.

Unfortunately as I’m the main earner in our family, it really isn’t an option, but that doesn’t stop me doing the research and learning more about it.

It seems to be quite big in the US and they have a lot more resources over there for homeschooling than I’ve found in the UK.

I’ve also discovered that as homeschoolers, you are entitled to discounts at local softplay locations and museums, which is good to know because the cost of home schooling always worried me.

Having just gone through the very stressful process of gaining a place at Infants school for Miss NHM, I’m still very intrigued by home schooling but it’s not right for our family…yet.

We have a very audacious goal of taking a year “out” when Miss NHM is around 10 years old, and travelling the world. At this point we will need to home school Miss NHM so I need to ensure that I’ve done all of my research by then!

After all of my research I am still unsure of the difference between “homeschooling” and “unschooling”.

There are actually several families in Basingstoke who “homeschool” and “Unschool” and in my very privileged role as NorthHantsMum I’ve come to know of some of these families.

If you are already home schooling or are interested in maybe home schooling in the future, let me know and I will add you to my “secret” home schooling group on Facebook.

Also, if you have any resources that you’ve got from homeschooling, let me know, as I’m planning on putting together a future post on resources from the UK and US, that could be useful for a family who are home schooling.
