Proteus ‘Summer of Love’ – Chance to Win Tickets for NHM Readers

Hi I’m Mary and I work for Proteus – a professional theatre company who make and tour their own productions and also run the Proteus Creation Space – just beyond the top of town (situated in front of Fairfield’s school and on the corner opposite St Mary’s Church and the Bounty Inn).

Many NHM readers may have previously visited the Creation Space to attend one of our hugely popular winter family shows or the in-house Christmas Show (including last year’s A Christmas Carol and How Many Sleeps ‘til Christmas), to visit the on-site café, or attend one of the many classes hosted in the building.

However, you may not immediately think of us when you have your ‘adult hat on’ as a destination for your next date night or night out with friends, and we want to change that!

This summer Proteus have brought together a series of performances from outstanding artists which we are calling the ‘Summer of Love’.

Each of the shows explore the theme of love in its many different guises – with shows that span comedy, circus, Shakespeare, dance, theatre and acrobatics!

We thought that each show would make a perfect date night for time-poor parents who are looking to do something a bit different, without straying too far from home. Instead of the usual trip to the local chain restaurant or cinema, why not come and experience a really exciting piece of performance with your partner, or best friends – literally on your doorstep?

We are so excited to be bringing award-winning and internationally acclaimed artists to Basingstoke – but without the West End price tag, and have deliberately kept ticket pricing really affordable. With tickets costing no more than £10 and many at just £5, we hope this will tempt people to try something new. Our beautiful café bar is also open before and after the performances, so you can make a night of it!

The Summer of Love season kicked off last Thursday with a hilarious one-woman show ‘It Started with Jason Donovan’ and here is some of the feedback:

“I wish it could have gone on!”
“I laughed so much I cried!”
“Good for the soul.”

You can see the trailer here: https://youtu.be/QyR5cCjbtw0

Win Tickets!

We would love to offer one lucky NHM reader the chance to win a pair of tickets to the performance of your choice.

All you have to do is like the North Hants Mum Facebook post and tag the person you would like to bring with you on your perfect #datenight by 4pm Thursday 21st June 2018.

Below are details of all the performances that make up the Summer of Love season and we really hope to welcome you and your ‘date’ to the Creation Space soon!

Tinytoes and Stickyfingers – Special offer for NHM Readers!!

Tinytoes and Stickyfingers, Capturing a moment in time forever…

Hi, my name is Sherilyn and I started ‘Tinytoes and Stickyfingers’ nearly 9 years ago, when my second child was born. I create beautiful keepsakes of all your little ones.

I’ve always been a ‘maker’ gaining my degree in Fine Art Sculpture (a long time ago now!) followed by a career in graphic design. When I discovered how to make fingerprint jewellery, it seemed a perfect fit for me and my family, and Tinytoes was born.

The range of products I now produce has grown every year and now includes 3d casting, raised impressions, family and nursery prints as well as the original line of fingerprint/hand and foot/doodle silver jewellery. All personalized to you and your loved ones.

Having been established for so long it is lovely to catch up with mums and dads whose own families have also grown in the last 9 years and to take prints and castings of their new additions, even the furry ones!

For the last three years Tinytoes and Stickyfingers has also been part of the very lovely ‘All Our Own Crafts’ popup shop in Festival Place Basingstoke. Where you can see just a small selection of the range I now produce.

This year the ‘Hook Home and Garden Centre’ are also showing some of the Tinytoes and Stickyfinger range, and they just happen to have some amazing cakes and a fabulous children’s area so well worth a visit.

Everything is handmade, fired and finished by me at my home studio in Basingstoke, giving me the flexibility to offer casting or printing appointments either in the comfort of your home or mine. Or if you prefer, you still have the option to simply use my website www.tinytoesandstickyfingers.co.uk and be sent a kit with full printing instructions.

As a special offer for NHM readers I’m offering a 15% discount on all framed 3D cast bookings made by the end of March 2018. Just mention this offer when you make your appointment.

Tot Cross Buns: Children’s cooking classes!

picture-1

Childrens cooking classes

Tot Cross Buns is a cookery class for children aged from 2 years old. The business is the brain child of Allison Woolford, a Basingstoke mum who is passionate about cooking and wants to pass on this passion to children – giving them confidence with food and encouraging them to try new tastes and have fun in the kitchen with mum and dad, granny or grandad.

tot_cross_buns-10

Allison says:

‘I am a home cook for my husband and little girl, Lilly. I believe every child should have fun cooking, tasting and exploring food.  I have many happy memories cooking with my Dad from a young age, giving me the inspiration for Tot Cross Buns.”   Classes are educational and fun!   I also have Kerry Marsay on the team who is also a home cook with a passion in baking, she has spent many an hour baking and cooking with her two children.

Fun and Relaxed

At Tot Cross Buns we aim to introduce children to food through taste, smell and touch all in a fun and relaxed environment. They’ll be cooking healthy recipes (some treats too!), which have all been tried and tested, and will involve the children every step of the way – and there will be no washing up to worry about!

tot_cross_buns-12

Food Related Activity

The classes will involve cooking anything from muffins and scones to pizza and quiche and while they’re cooking there will be a fun food related activity. This could be anything from exploring textures and tastes to planting seeds.

It’s time to get those slow cookers out!

There is definitely a chill in the air in the evenings now, so it feels like it must be the start of “slow cooker season”. Yay!

As I’ve mentioned before, I use our slow cookers all year round but they really come into their own in August.

Those of you who have been reading NorthHantsMum for a while, will know how much I LOVE our slow cookers and how useful they are to cook healthy and cheap meals for my family.

Over the past few years I’ve put together a list of slow cooker recipes that I use regularly and have emailed them out to readers.

I’ve now taken this a step further and consolidated them into a “booklet”.

If you would like a copy of my slow cooker recipe booklet, which is great for someone who is starting out with using their slow cooker, please email me at NorthHantsMum@gmail.com.

However, please remember that NHM is my hobby, so it might take me a while to email it across to you.

Hope you find your slow cookers and the booklet useful!

Flexible futures-offering one day retreats and 1-1 career coaching

IMG_1612

Hello, I’m Joanna Jacobs, previously a Chineham resident we moved down to Alresford 8 months ago. I am a mum to a 3 year old girl, as well as a coach, facilitator and HR consultant, and I am thrilled to be bringing the Instant Pause to Hampshire on Saturday 13th August.

The Instant Pause, designed by International Board Level coach Danielle Marchant, is a one day pitstop for busy people , like you, who need a day to focus on themselves and their life.

You might be a busy parent, considering career options after having a family, an entrepreneur, experiencing change in your work, home or family, approaching retirement, leaving college, or simply need time to stop.

The day includes a reflective activity in the morning, before getting creative in the afternoon in designing a vision board, setting your intentions for the future. There will be time for a delicious, healthy lunch and opportunity to spend time in the lovely surroundings of the yurt.

Take a look at this short film to find out more about the day and what other people’s experiences have been.

https://daniellemarchant.wistia.com/medias/iqn79a59or

I attended the Instant Pause myself in London in January 2016 when I  was experiencing challenges in finding relevant work that used my previous skills and experiences that fitted around my daughter’s preschool hours. By the end of the day, I had real clarity on my life and career priorities, and felt rejuvenated, inspired and determined to succeed.

IMG_1685

As a direct result of the retreat, I am launching my own business, Flexible Futures, providing 1:1 coaching for individuals experiencing transition particularly around their career, and hosting the Instant Pause retreats.

The first Instant Pause in Hampshire is taking place on Saturday 13th August 2016 from 10am-5pm at the Riverside Yurt Cafe, near Barton Stacey, just off the A303 on the way to Finkley Down farm, just 20 minutes from Basingstoke.

There is a special offer for the August event, priced at £99 (normally £129) including refreshments, lunch and all materials.

For more information and to book, connect with Jo at Flexible Futures facebook page https://www.facebook.com/flexiblefutures/ or http://www.lifebydanielle.com/retreats/instant-pause. Jo can also be contacted directly on 07584 329179.

P.S. if you haven’t visited the Riverside Yurt Cafe before, do make time to stop off and sample their delicious teas and cakes, or attend a yoga, pilates or another one of their events. There’s so much on even for children! Connect with them at https://www.facebook.com/riversideyurtcafe/

Review 2016: Studio 1314

Recently I saw some pictures that Jaz from Caterpillar Music had of her family that the team at Studio 1314 had taken. They were so gorgeous that it reminded me that I needed to get some more pictures of our family taken.

Lucy and Wayne run Studio 1314 and I met Lucy at one of my NHM Networking lunches. So when I mentioned to her that I’d like to get some pictures taken she very kindly suggested we do a Review for them.

I cannot praise Lucy enough. The whole experience was sooo lovely and relaxing and I am beyond delighted with the final pictures!!!

Lucy and Wayne are also very kindly offering a Special Offer just for NHM Readers, which is listed at the bottom of this post.

11

Pre Session briefing with Lucy

I had a twenty minute call with Lucy about a week before our shoot and she asked me some questions and told me what to expect. She advised us to bring lots of changes of outfits, especially for Miss NHM, and some items that reflect our personality (You can see one of the final pictures on the banner of “Louise nhm Smith” on Facebook).

6

Photo Shoot at Studio 1314

The Studio is based just past East Stratton which is about 15 minutes drive from Hatch Warren Sainsburys.

We followed the signs to East Stratton and the studio is on the other side of the village on the left hand side. If you follow the postcode it’s very easy to find.

The site of the studio is beautiful as you can see below:

studio (3)

studio (2)

I was really surprised at how big the studio is. It’s HUGE and that’s without even seeing the Viewing Room!

It’s a really big space with lots of seating and you can easily fit up to 15 people in the studio, so it’s a perfect place if you wanted to do a big family shoot.

studio (4)

When we arrived Lucy asked us to take our socks off, offered us drinks and then we got started. There was music playing in the background which gave the shoot a real party feel and Miss NHM kept wiggling to the music, on and off camera! lol.

I loved that we could spread out and not have to worry about having out outfits all over the place. We had about 15 different outfits with us!! Thankfully there is a private changing area if you need it.

Lucy was one of the most relaxed photographers that we have ever worked with. I don’t know if it’s because Miss NHM is older not but we barely had to get involved, apart from helping with outfits. I also don’t know if it helps that Lucy has a three year old daughter of her own, so she knows how to interact with children.

Miss NHM really enjoyed asking Lucy questions and following her directions and if you see some of the final pictures, you’d think that Miss NHM was a professional model!!! (not that I’m biased of course! lol).4

It was really nice that Lucy wasn’t constantly shouting Miss NHM’s name to get her attention, but was interacting with her and just going with the flow of whatever Miss NHM wanted to do.

It was a 90 minute shoot which really took the time pressure off. Lucy said that if it’s a newborn shoot they allow 2 hours!

1

We ended up with lots and lots of different pictures that all capture an element of Miss NHM’s personality in all her different outfits.

I even liked the ones that Lucy took of me and Mr NHM and I HATE having my picture taken! :-D.

10

Miss NHM normally gets fed up after 20 minutes of a photo shoot but we really enjoyed it. Even Mr NHM commented on the way home that he really enjoyed it, and I didn’t even prompt him! :-D.

Reviewing the pictures

A few weeks later (our fault cause we have such busy diaries!) we went back to see how the pictures came out.

We LOVED them!!!!9

They are absolutely BRILLIANT photos that were WAY better than I expected.

There is a separate viewing area which even had popcorn, biscuits, Mr Men tissues, colouring books and even a play area for the children to play with whilst we looked through the pictures!

5

There was a massive screen in the viewing room and we spent about an hour going through them whilst Miss NHM amused herself with the colouring, trying to snaffle all of the popcorn and playing in the play area. She really liked seeing pictures of herself too!

Lucy has a tablet that she uses instead of a mouse which helps her move the images  around directly on the screen and both Mr NHM and Miss NHM were really intrigued with this. It also made it really easy to decide which pictures we wanted printed.

Special Offer for NHM Readers

Lucy and Wayne are also very kindly offering a very special offer for NHM Readers. (Thank you very much!!!)

The first 5 people to contact the team at Studio 1314 and book before April 2016 will receive a  Free family photoshoot and 2 mounted 7×5 inch prints of their choice.

This would normally have a value of £150.

This offer is ONLY open to the first 5 people who book and ONLY available to NorthHantsMum Readers. Yay! 😀

Facilities on site

  • Tea and coffee facilities
  • Toilets in the studio
  • Changing room area with a baby changing stand (loved this!)
  • Plenty of free parking
  • Occasional Groupon Offers
  • Pets are very welcome for photo shoots too

Final Thoughts

We are absolutely delighted with the final pictures. I can’t stop raving about them!

Lucy and her husband Wayne have thought of everything! It definitely is the little details that count.

It was by far one of the most relaxing photo shoots we have ever had. It was a really lovely experience, a lovely studio and we were really impressed!

You can find out more about Studio 1314 at:

Website: www.studio1314.co.uk

Facebook Page: www.facebook.com/studio1314photography

Disclaimer: This post is a review of Studio1314. Our photography shoot was supplied free of charge for the purposes of the review. I was not expected to write a positive review and any opinions expressed are my own.

Brush-Baby: Infant Dental-Care Education and Products for Babies, Toddlers and Children (0 to 6 years of age)

We used the Brush-Baby when Miss NHM was tiny and she loved it!

AND the Brush-Baby team are offering NHM a special discount!!! 😀 (see bottom of the post).

I had no idea the business was located near Winchester, just down the road!

Brush-Baby: Infant Dental-Care Education and Products for Babies, Toddlers and Children (0 to 6 years of age)

Did you know?

  • Over 40% of children under the age of 5 have some form of tooth decay.
  • Babies have more tastebuds in their mouth than an adult and which are more sensitive – hence the reason why some dislike the adult ‘minty’ toothpaste.
  • Baby teeth start to form in the womb and at birth all 20 baby teeth are present under the gums.
  • It’s vitally important to keep baby and toddler gums clean as it helps to prevent severe teething pain caused by the accumulation of food particles and bacteria under tiny gum flaps.
  • The common perception that baby or ‘milk teeth’ ‘don’t matter’, as they will eventually fall out is incorrect. Milk teeth help children to eat, speak and smile. They also act as ‘space holders’ for developing adult teeth and help give the face its shape and form affecting how a child will look.
  • Fluoride toothpaste is important – but it needs to be the correct level for the age of child. Too much fluoride can cause ‘fluorosis’ – which is evidenced by white ‘specks’ on teeth.
  • If your child refuses point blank to brush their teeth, at least try to get some toothpaste in their mouths because then at least fluoride will get in contact with their teeth and gums at some stage!
  • A recent survey conducted by YouGov and Denplan – 69% of parents wish for ‘no tooth decay’ as their wish for children’s oral health.

So what can I do?

Brush-Baby offer an easy-to-follow 3 step routine, for early years gum and toothcare.

BB-Bloc_WO-RGBCol[1]

Started by an entrepreneurial mum, based near Winchester, who frustrated by the lack of dental-care products available to her baby daughter, she designed and developed her own unique range which offer ergonomically-designed products for babies, toddlers and children from newborn to 6 years of age, taking into account their skills and behaviours.

Brush-Baby – innovative 3 step routine for Early Years Toothcare

Brush-Baby bridges the  gap between the dental industry and the consumer by not only providing a unique early years (0 to 6 years) dental-care products for babies, toddlers and young children, but also educates parents on new thinking about dental care and covers the three stages of ‘no teeth’, ‘teething’ and ‘teeth.’

3-Steps Graphic_1

Step 1 – Cleaning Baby Gums (0 to 16 months)

DentalWipes

Impregnated with Xylitol (a natural-occurring substance which acts against decay-causing bacteria), this easy-to-use, disposable fingersleeve, is worn by the parent who puts their finger into the baby’s mouth to:

  • clean the mouth and cheek areas
  • massage and soothe gums
  • prepare a safe, clean environment for the development of milk teeth.

DentalWipes 28

Step 2 – Teething and Brushing – (10 months to 3 years)

Chewable Toothbrush and Teether

  • Capitalising upon a child’s natural urge to “chew” – the Chewable Toothbrush/Teether can be cooled in the ‘fridge and used with teething gel to offer relief for sore teething gums.
  • Then as teeth emerge and combined with a small blob of toothpaste, the soft, pliable, top and bottom silicone bristles help clean teeth, upper and lower at the same time including the ‘hard to reach’ back teeth.
  • Familiarity with the Brush and ergonomically-designed the Chewable Toothbrush fit a baby’s dental arch perfectly and they are able to conduct the brushing and cleaning activity themselves with adult supervision.

Chewable Toothbrush front image flat 2013

Step 3 – Brushing & Flossing – From 3 years

FlossBrush

Flossing should be introduced as soon as two teeth start to touch as it removes the plaque that brushing misses. However, many children find it difficult to master the ‘act of flossing’.

Brush-Baby’s FlossBrush is specifically designed for children as it helps to clean between teeth.  mikeykidzsonicpinkhires (6)

Baby and Toddler-Friendly Toothpastes

Due to their development babies have far more, and in fact, much more sensitive tastebuds than an adult, hence sometimes their dislike of the adult ‘minty’ toothpastes which they may find too harsh and too high a fluoride-content and hence tooth-brushing off-putting.

  • Non-minty toothpastes:
    • Teething Toothpaste- Gentle Applemint flavoured toothpaste with Camomile to soothe gums
    • Baby & Toddler Toothpaste: Non-foaming with a gentle Applemint flavour to encourage brushing. Contains both Xylitol and low fluoride* (500ppmF) to protect teeth
    • Children’s Tutti Frutti Toothpaste: Great flavour gets kids brushing.  Contains both Xylitol and fluoride (1350ppmF) to protect teeth.
