Basingstoke and Deane Peace Garden – Children’s Art Competition – ends tomorrow! (13th July)

What does Peace mean to you?

– Why not let us know by entering the children’s competition to design a picture, a poem or some text that tells us what peace means to you.

As part of the Basingstoke and Deane Peace Garden being created in War Memorial Park we want to include bronze plaques designed by local children, to be set into the paving.

The competition is open to children resident within the Borough with categories for 4 to 10 year olds and 11 to 16 year olds.

Five winning entries will be chosen from each category and turned into plaques which will be set into the paving in time for the opening of the garden on International Day of Peace on Friday 21st September.

(All entries will be displayed in the town centre after the opening).

Entries must be an original idea reflecting the aim of the garden to create a quiet space for everyone to enjoy as a lasting celebration of peace and reconciliation.

To take part in the competition, find out more and download the plaque template visit www.basingstoke.gov.uk/peacegarden or email peacegardenadvisorygroup@basingstoke.gov.uk to request a paper template for your design.

Entries must be in black and white, not colour and the closing date is Friday 13 July.

Drama Tots is taking part in Children’s Activities Week, 30th April – 4th May 2018

Children’s Activities Week is an all new initiative bringing together thousands of activities, clubs and classes for children. This year it runs from the 30th April-4th May and Drama Tots Basingstoke is taking part!

Drama Tots is a preschool drama programme that incorporates many of the EYFS themes and uses music, movement and imaginary play to make them come to life. Perfect for developing communication skills, confidence and harnessing the creativity of imagination.

As part of the week our classes will be open to all (please email to confirm) and the normal class fee of £6 will be donated to the Caudwell Children’s charity, supporting disabled children and their families across the U.K.

The theme of the event is #WatchMeFly and our class will be covering lots of flying related things. The perfect opportunity for your little one (and you if you like) to dress up in a flying related costume, fairy, butterfly, superhero or maybe a pilot?

At 10.15am on Monday the 30th April we will also be taking part in a world record attempt with Sid from CBeebies, he has choreographed a dance for us all to learn and do together, hopefully at the same time as thousands of others around the country.

There will also be an opportunity to enter into a prize draw to win a family holiday to Alton Towers.

If you would like to join us at one of the classes, here are the details;

Monday St Mary’s church room Old Basing:
9.40am-10.20 18mnth-3yr old’s (we may run over with the record attempt)

10.30-11.15 3yrs-school age (world record attempt at 10.15 so come around 10.05)

We ARE keeping a “Sitting with Jane” bench in Basingstoke! WHOOOOOOHOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

When the first 12 Lot’s (benches) started bidding at £3000 my first thought was “ah well, at least we’ve raised £1000 for Ark Cancer Centre Charity“.

My second thought was “PHEW!! I don’t need to work out what happens next if we win one!!!” Hahaha.

Then, Lot 13, “Girl Power” came on the screen and they started playing the Spice Girls in the background.

And I started to get a tingly feeling in my tummy…

The bidding started at £3K. Then it dropped to £2K. And then it dropped to £1K and I felt my hand shoot up into the air, with the bidding paddle.

Now, it’s a huge responsibility to bid with other people’s money and there was a LOT of expectation. Running a campaign like this is a huge honour and privilege, one which I don’t take lightly.

I was shaking ALL night.

Several of the benches raised £7K and I felt a teeeennny tiny bit out of my league.

Had it not been for Sue, Rachel and Cathy who came with me, I would have been a dribbling mess on the floor.

And then the Auctioneer said, “anymore bids?”…”Anymore?”…

Sue and Rachel were sat next to me and were clutching my arms and I LITERALLY didn’t breathe for about 5 minutes. At least that’s what it felt like.

“Going once”….

“Going twice”…..

And somebody put in a bid at £1250.

GUTTED!!!!!

And that was it.

I thought it was all over.

I think I literally sagged in my chair.

I heard someone behind me bid for £1500. Then the bidding closed.

And then I got a text.

From Laura at The Topiary, who was sat at the back of the auction.

We had a conversation in the week that we would collaborate if things got a bit hairy in the auction and it didn’t look like either of us would get a chance of getting one.

And in her text it said “I’ll give you the £500”. “You can have it xxx”.

So, we got it!

“Girl Power”.

(Not the best pictures as I was STILL shaking at this point. However, I expect to see far better pictures of this bench in the future! lol).

Thank you!!!!

I need to say a HUGE thank you to the following people, without whom we never would have stood a chance.

My beloved husband, Mr NHM, whose encouragement and belief in my “crazy” ideas is never ending.

Sue – who took Miss NHM and I to see our first bench at the Walled Garden and got me caught up in this whole thing!! Your friendship and unfailing support means so much to me.

Rebecca at The Typeface Group who has been so supportive along this whole journey and who kept me going when I got back from holiday at the end of August and I thought I’d lost momentum.

Mark at The Ark for his brilliant support, enthusiasm and encouragement and Michelle for her wonderful support!!

Steve and Charlotte at Festival Place for their support and encouragement.

All of the NHM Ladies who believed we could do it and donated:  Wendy, CathyW, Lilian, LauraE, Zoe, Cathy, Karen, Lisa, Helen, Gisella, LauraW, Juliet, Emma, Sue, Sally, Mary, Sarah, Allison, Ceri, Katie, SueS, Victoria, Julie, Rebecca, Jules, Eleanor, Pauline, Michele, Jaz, Rachel, Natasha, Stephany, Kath, Sharon, Sarah, Claire, BeckyT, Lisa, Emily, Pam, Cat, Lyndsey, Rebecca H, Stephanie, Gillian. Thank you!!! You are ALL AWESOME!!!!!

Everyone who entered the competition and helped to raised the profile of the campaign. All of the children looked FANTASTIC!!!!

Mike O’Neil at Action Trophies for his very generous donation.

Nicky from Ma Humbugs Old Fashioned Sweet Shop for her generous donation.

John from Tidal Bay Crazy Adventure Golf for his VERY generous donation (£250!!!) about 30 minutes before the event started. STREEEESSSFFULLLL!!!!! Hahaha

Laura from The Topiary for her INCREDIBLE donation and without whom we never would have stood a chance of getting the bench.

Apologies if there is anyone whom I’ve missed off. I’ve barely slept a wink! lol.

What happens next?

Although I had a very strong feeling that we would get a bench, I hadn’t quite sorted out any of the details about what happens if we actually did!! lol.

I am looking to donate the bench to somewhere that people can still access the bench and where it will be indoors so that it lasts for a very long time. If you have any sensible suggestions please do let me know at NorthHantsMum@gmail.com.

Otherwise it’s going on my Mum’s front drive! 😀 😀 :-D.

Also, if you know of anyone who might be able to help me move the bench as it needs to be removed by Monday (18th September 2017), please do get in touch!!!! (Update: Thank you VERY much to JV Bouncy Castle who very kindly donated their time, muscles and van to move the bench from Laura’s garage to the Discovery centre!)

Update July 2018: The bench is now on permanent display for everyone to sit on, at the Basingstoke Discovery Centre in the downstairs lobby area.

Still no plaque though. I’ve given up asking when they will put it up :-(.

Finally

I would really love to get a little plaque for the bench which will say:

“I dedicate this bench to all of the Mums, and their children, in North Hampshire”.

We did it.

Thank you!

You are all AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! xx

A very special Competition!!!!

Thank you again to everyone who came to the NorthHantsMum Christmas 2015 Expo.

Thank you also to everyone who bought raffle tickets. I REALLY hated doing the raffle and someone who completed the feedback survey (thank you for your fab suggestions!) after the Expo suggested a fantastic idea for doing the raffle next time where I don’t need to do any announcements, so I’m going to do that next time (which I’m sure you will also be delighted about! lol).

Anyyyway, in the chaos that was the raffle I accidentally missed one of the raffle prizes. I have spoken to the Anvil team and they have said that they are fine for me to run this as a competition.

The Anvil have very kindly donated:

A family ticket (2+2) to the panto  Jack and the Beanstalk, on the 13th December 2015 at 6pm.

To win these tickets…

Please comment with “ME” and “share” this post from the NorthHantsMum FB page by 8pm on Sunday 6th December 2015 to be in with a chance of winning.

I will ask Miss NHM to choose the winner from random (perks of the job :-D).

Donation

I don’t feel right asking people to “secret bid” on these tickets.

However, if you would like to make a donation towards this competition, please donate at the following  link: https://www.justgiving.com/Tyler-Morris/

****This Competition is now Closed****

Yay, I’m so excited! It’s the first competition on NHM!! Whoop Whoop!!!

Sarah from Stagecoach South sent me a lovely email asking me if I would like to publicise the Santa Bus that will be running again this year in Basingstoke.

The Santa Bus is a special service in the lead up to Christmas which is decorated to share some festive cheer, but best of all… Santa is driving the bus!! There will also be a collection to raise money for St Michael’s Hospice and there will be special treats to give away to the children.

The Santa Bus will be running on selected Services from 17th Dec to 24th Dec. The service fares are the same as the ‘normal service’, starting at 80p for a single journey, £1.50 return (£1.40 off peak). The fare will increase depending on the journey you wish to make.

To check for details about when the Santa Bus is running, click here: www.stagecoachbus.com/santa.

In order to use the Santa Bus you will use the bus as a normal service, boarding and alighting during your journey, as per your ticket.

If you want to stay on the bus for more than one journey (because you and your children are having too much fun!) you will need to purchase a day ticket, rather than a single or return journey.

A Basingstoke family day ticket (valid the whole day) is also available, priced £8.60 peak/ £7.50 off peak (off peak is after 9am Monday to Friday and all day at weekends). This is for 2 adults and 2 children or 1 adult and 3 children.

The zone map for this ticket can be found here: www.stagecoachbus.com/uploads/basingstoketcktzonemap[1].pdf

Now for the even more exciting bit! Sarah is kindly offering two Stagecoach family tickets to two very lucky NHM Readers! All you have to do is answer this (EXTREMELY easy) question:

  • Q. Which Reindeer had a very shiny nose?
    Santa Bus 2

and send your answer in an email to Sarah at:

by End of Day Friday 14th December.

This will give Sarah time to email you back for your address and then stick the tickets in the post so you can get them in time to go on the Santa Bus with them!

You will then be entered into the EXCLUSIVE NHM competition to win a Family Day ticket, which is valid for all Stagecoach services across Hampshire, Sussex and Surrey.

A family is classed at 2 x adult and 2 x children or 1 adult and 3 x children – ideal for taking the children out on Santa bus (a child is 15yrs or younger). The ticket will expire at the end of February, so can be used on any of the bus services, not just the Santa Bus.

How exciting!??!?!?! So, what are you waiting for? You’ve got to be in it to win it, so get emailing Sarah quickly!

Oh and the winners will be picked at random by Sarah and her team, so I can’t be blamed if you don’t win!! 😉

Thank you Sarah for the lovely tickets and for letting all NHM Readers have an opportunity to win tickets for this fabulous Santa Bus experience!
