I love my Slow Cooker!!!

I realize how tragic that statement is, but at the moment, I really do love it. It’s helping my family eat healthy, nutritious meals that I haven’t had to slave over in the kitchen for hours. I believe that one of the most important things as a Mum is to ensure that your family are eating and exercising well. Both of these set your loved ones up in good stead for the future.

My Slow Cooker enables me to spend more time with my family doing fun things or going for walks and still enables me to feed them well. We had a small slow cooker that was suitable for two people but it never seemed to create enough food for a whole meal. Now that there are three of us I’ve upgraded to a much bigger slow cooker so that I can cook two meals at the same time, saving time, money and energy! We often have one half of the cooked meal for dinner and then I split the rest of the meal and freeze it to use for dinner another day or for lunch at work. We’ve also found that in the colder weather the slow cooker cooks the right kind of meals, warm and nourishing whilst being healthy and nutritious. It’s wonderful to come home to a kitchen that smells of yummy dinner.

I’ve done a lot of research over the past few months since falling in love with my slow cooker.  It’s amazing how many recipies can be adapted for the slow cooker.

  •  If you are cooking your meat for long enough, you don’t even need to brown it off first, just chuck it all into the pot.
  • I’ve read somewhere that in order for your slow cooker to be most cost effective you should use it on the low setting the majority of the time.

I know this sounds very organized but I think you need to be when you have children. A little bit of planning goes an awfully long way and anything that helps to decrease my stress levels is worth it!

Check out the following links which show the best slow cooker’s on the UK market and some easy slow cooker recipes to get you started…

14 Things you don’t want to forget for Christmas

I’ve been thinking of all those things you don’t want to run out of at Christmas. You might want to double up on these items beforehand so you don’t have to make a special trip to the shops during Christmas with little ones in tow.

This is what I’ve come up with so far:

  1. Tin Foil
  2. Batteries for all of those new Toys
  3. Greaseproof paper
  4. Toilet Rolls
  5. Dishwasher Tablets (if you are blessed to have a dishwasher) or washing up liquid
  6. Bin liners
  7. Lightbulbs
  8. Nappies (if your children are using them still)
  9. Wetwipes and Nappy Sacks (If your children are using them still)
  10. Pet Food
  11. Matches (you never know when you will need them!)
  12. Formula (if using)
  13. Washing powder
  14. Alcohol 😀

School catchment finder, Report on school admissions and Ofsted Reports in North Hampshire

Following on from the Education posts there are some very interesting links below (Thanks Su for forwarding them on!).

I don’t want to scare anyone but you may be intrigued to see where your little one falls in the catchment lottery for when they start Infants school  in North Hampshire and where they will be allotted for Junior’s and Senior schools: School catchment finder

The report on School Admissions is a really interesting read, particularly at the end of the report where it is listed the number of children that have been accepted into the school and whether brothers and sisters have also been accepted: Report on school admissions

If you have a little one starting nursery soon you may also find the following website useful as you should be able to check up on the Nursery’s latest Ofsted report.

You can also find Infants, Juniors and Senior schools Ofsted reports from this linky: Ofsted Early years and Childcare

Sorry if I’ve scared anyone but I hope you find the above useful. It would be great to hear your feedback…

What is Steiner education?

Steiner education…

  • Works for all children irrespective of academic ability, class, ethnicity or religion;
  • Takes account of the needs of the whole child – academic, physical, emotional and spiritual;
  • Is based on an understanding of the relevance of the different phases of child development;
  • Develops a love of learning and an enthusiasm for school;
  • Sees artistic activity and the development of the imagination as integral to learning;
  • Is tried and tested and is part of state funded, mainstream provision in most European countries;
  • Is respected worldwide for its ability to produce very able young people who have a strong sense of self and diverse capacities that enable them to become socially and economically responsible citizens.

Who was Rudolf Steiner?

Rudolf Steiner (1861 – 1925) was an innovative academic born in Austria whose ideas founded the basis of Anthroposophy. He applied his ideas to education as well as agriculture, medicine, architecture and social reform. The Steiner Waldorf Schools Fellowship acknowledges Rudolf Steiner as the founding inspiration of modern day Steiner schools, but does not promote Anthroposophy or endorse every aspect of it.

Unwanted Baby Items – Recycle/Reuse/Sell

What do you do with all of those baby items that you no longer need but don’t want to throw away? If you don’t have friends with babies whom you can pass the items on to, then the linky’s below might help. Regardless of the state of the material, someone, somewhere, will be able to make money from it, even if the item is no longer salvageable. So don’t throw those baby clothes away, just take them to the textile bank/bin.

Recycle/Reuse

(I’ve used Freegle many times as it gives me a little buzz when I’ve made someone’s day by giving them something that they need, for free!)

Give them to charity

(If you are looking for furniture for your children’s play room then this is a great place to pick up cheap sofas, cheap tables, etc.)

Charity Shops in Basingstoke

  • British Heart Foundation – Wote Street
  • RSPCA – London Street
  • Cancer Research UK – Wote Street
  • St Michaels Hospice Shop – Kings Road
  • Shaw Trust – Wote Street
  • St Michaels Hospice Retail Ltd – Chineham Shopping centre
  • Annies Charity Shop – Elmwood Parade, Winklebury

Donate them to North Hants Hospital Maternity Ward

I don’t have the details for this but it’s on my list of things to find out about. I think they will take newborn clothes, sterilising equipment and donations of unused pre-packaged formula. If you are breastfeeding and are very lucky to have “extra” they are also desperate for breastmilk donations for SCBU (Special Care Baby Unit). However, the closest breast milk bank is at the Princess Anne Hospital in Southampton.

Sell Them

(There are also Nearly New Sales coming up in Hartley Wintney and Fleet, Woodley, Yateley and Farnham)

(I’ve used this site to sell goods that are priced less than £50)

Does anybody have any other suggestions for recycling, reusing or selling unwanted baby items?
